Epson ET-3850 Driver, the middle model in a new line of all-in-one printers aimed at the home office. It’s a three-in-one device with an ADF (automatic document feeder) and refillable ink tanks instead of cartridges. It connects via Wi-Fi, USB, or Ethernet, supports Apple AirPrint and Mopria Print Service, and is compatible with the Epson Smart Panel mobile app. Its scanner is equipped with an automatic feeder but doesn’t support duplex scanning or lacks fax functionality. It has a 250-sheet input tray and supports automatic double-sided printing. The Epson EcoTank ET-3850 is a good printer overall. Its ink tank yields a very large number of prints, even compared to other supertank in its class, making it one of the best options for high-volume printing. It also has a great color gamut compared to other similar printers, but it produces photos with a lot of grain. The Epson EcoTank ET-3850 is a little larger than other A4 all-in-ones because it has to accommodate four fairly large ink reservoirs, but it hides its bulk well. It is almost cuboidal in shape with all of its flaps, including the ADF and tilting control panel folding seamlessly away. It is surprisingly light at 6.7kg and it feels a little flimsy in construction. Our sample arrived in a dented carton that had clearly been dropped and despite all the polystyrene packaging, it was enough to make the flaps of the ADF fall off. They clipped back in with no permanent damage, but it doesn’t feel like a premium product. In normal use, the ET-3850 revealed itself to be usefully quick. It dispatched our 25-page black text test at 15.8ppm – slightly faster than Epson’s claimed speed – and this rose to 19ppm with the quality dropped to draft. Our graphics-heavy mixed colour test is less of a pushover, but even then the ET-3850 hit 4.6ppm; that’s a decent showing from what’s essentially a mid-range device.
